DUNCE HAT KING: When Life is Pass or Fail

A Memoir

Man was I excited! I was four years old, and I finally got to go to school, just like my four siblings! All the grades, kindergarten through eighth, were together in the same room, and we shared the same teacher.

My desk was right against Teacher’s. How cool was that? I turned around and waved at my siblings. This was a big day. My first day at school! Who else did I know? I wanted to look at everything, hear everything, be a part of everything. And I was going to learn lots of stuff! Or was I?

Before a week had gone by, Teacher marched me up front to a corner next to the blackboard. “Face the wall and don’t turn around,” she commanded. I shrank back as a pointed dunce hat landed on my head. Honestly, I was trying to learn my ABCs, but how could I sit still that long? If I even wiggled, Teacher’s eyes shot to me and she shook her head. My chest snuffed in a sharp breath. I hung my head when I heard my classmates giggle.

  12. It was so nice to read a book without filthy language in it. Also, thank you for adding God in the book — you don’t find that in many books. I only wish that Jake would have Baptized the girls.
Thank you 5 stars for sure.

Riveting! Spellbinding! I am anxious for the sequel. The two of you collaborate as few are able to do. I did not realize it was a dual authorship until reading the comments at the end. Thank you for writing such a clean adventure.

      • It’s been great writing as a team. One of those times when two heads are better than one, LOL! Thanks for your encouragement, Beverly ~ we hope our books will be examples that “clean” can be successful.

  13. I love the book! Keep up the good writing

  20. I loved this book and could not put it down!!! Can’t wait fir the next one, hurry!!!

  21. $2.99 I will never get back. What a lousy book. It should be filed under religious nonsense psycho babble.

  22. Loved this book!! Anxiously awaiting the sequel!

  23. Just started reading Stranded. Pretty good so far. One comment though. Life jackets are International Orange and not Yellow.

    • Thanks for pointing that out, Joseph. We originally had the color orange and then changed it to yellow but can no longer remember why. Were life jackets yellow in the 1980s? Yellow and orange are two color options but perhaps not for international.

      • Once upon a time life jackets were yellow, but not in the 1980’s. Not sure when the color changed to International Orange, but by the 1980’s that was the approved color.

  24. I love survival books and living on islands/ shipwrecked books so I did a search on amazon a few days ago for something new and yours popped up. I bought it right then and there. I was hooked immediately. I finished your book after 2 1/2 days. One thing i was wondering was, did they ever make any blankets or hats out of the palm trees? And did any of the water ever make them sick? From all my survival shows I’ve ever watched they always say boil the water first. Also I didn’t know there was going to be any scripture in the book until I read it, I absolutely loved it. That warmed my heart so much. I was so glad Eve finally opened her heart to God. I can not wait until the sequel!!! When do you think that will be out? I’m dying to know how Eve survived at the end and if anything happened with her trial. Also I hope Eve and Jake adopt Crystal and then maybe have a baby of their own. I’m going to re-read your book now 😃. Thanks for the great read!!!

    • You’ve asked good questions, Courtney. Initially, the survivors in Stranded did not boil the water they found in the island’s streams. Basically they took a risk until they had the means of fire and a container to do it. As for using palm leaves for blankets in the cave, they didn’t because the temperature was comfortable. The temperatures of caves throughout the world are approximately equal to the average annual temperature at the surface, so at sea level in the Philippines, getting chilly wasn’t a problem (unless you were wet). Palm leaves as hats for shelter from the sun–now that would have been a good idea to use! And, yes, there is a sequel coming! If you sign up for our newsletter, we’ll keep you up to date on its progress. I hope you find even more enjoyment as you re-read Stranded. I always find new things when I read a second–or third–time through books I enjoy!

  25. Can’t wait for sequel. Great book. Am going to recommend it to book club.

  26. Found that I had trouble putting the book down. As one of the “seniors” I felt a bond with Betty. Anxiously awaiting the next book.

  27. Great read! Couldn’t put it down. Loved the characters.

  28. Wow – what an exciting story! I started it this afternoon & finished it at 1:15 am. I was watching the movie of it in my head and didn’t want to pause it! Believable characters, intense action, & the Gospel gently woven in. Looking forward to the sequel – I am signed up to be notified!

  29. Wow- what a great book! I started it Saturday afternoon…finished shortly after 1am! Only a few breaks for food – it was a great “movie” in my head as I didn’t just read it – I lept through the pages – had to know their fate! Great character development – you took ‘their’ time getting to know & be comfortable with each other; they had ups & downs like normal people (well, as normal as you can get stranded on an island…). You gave us suspense, excitement, friendship, romance, and – most importantly – a gentle presentation of the Gospel. Enough to bring out God’s truths, not too much to be preachy or a turn-off for non-Christians. Especially being inside Eva’s mind, as she scoffed, then struggled, then understood. I have already subscribed – can’t wait for the sequel or other books by you both!

(PS – I tried to post last night, but it never showed up – ? Take 2…)

    • Tammy, you really did take a flying leap to get through the story that fast, LOL! Glad to have you aboard our newsletter for updates!

      • Yeah – I have my own version of speed-reading…I can gather the info in a paragraph by almost more looking at it then reading each word…it’s weird, but works for me!

  30. Wow! What a book! I have passed the word and friends are getting their Kindle copies. So..I see the Sequel was supposed to be started in Feb. It’s March 1..I am waiting! ha ha Stranded was a phenomenal book. I am eagerly awaiting your next book! God bless you both! Pam

  31. I could not put this book down! It took me less than two days to read. Hope you have more like this coming, I could become an avid fan quickly.

I loved loved “Stranded”! The best book that I have read in a very long time. I can’t wait until the next book. I had hoped Jake and Eve would come together but I thought because of his love for Ginny that would not happen. How you transitioned into their love for one another was perfect! Now my only concern is the children’s reaction. Can’t wait to read what happens next!
